Basic!
It does its job, for kids its fine, for an absolute beginner, and introduction to micro science. Not really suitable at all for GCSE and above. Hard to focus.

This microscope is a definite 'DO NOT BUY'. The optical quality - how clear the image is - is very poor. The low magnification object lens (the one at the bottom of the tube) gives an almost acceptable but slightly hazy image. The image from the medium magnification lens is abominable. My partner likened it to looking through rippled water. It shows fuzzy colour fringes and bright and dark (diffraction) fringes around edges. This shows that the light source - a penlight type LED gives a too narrow beam of light. The highest power lens would get into focus at all - a totally unacceptable thing in a microscope. The build is light weight plastic, which would be acceptable if the you could get a clear view through the microscope but you do not get that. The objective lenses are the cheap and nasty sort with tiny front lenses - avoid any microscope with a small lens on the lowest magnification objective lens .If you have bought one as a Christmas present I would advise you to return it. It is a shoddy product utterly unworthy of the Celestron name. They make some very good astronomical telescopes - the reason I thought the microscope would be OK.Final thought if you see a microscope highlighting a large magnification on the box be very wary especially if it is relatively cheap.Nicholas Martin (Fellow Royal Microscopical Society)

Read the small print!
Neat. Inexpensive. Handy and functional. So far I have only managed to see my own (magnified) eyelashes but that is my fault rather than the microscopes'!If you are starting out to explore the wonderful world that only a microscope can reveal, then this is as good a place to start as anywhere.
