Like most RTRs, some smart upgrades can make this a great rock crawler

I waited three or so months to write this review because it took that much time to work with this crawlers strengths and minimize its weaknesses. What I have now is really a great rock crawler that's fun to drive, durable, and competent. Let's talk about the bone stock RTR as it drives right out of the box. As in most fresh from the box models, the performance was okay but definitely not great. The first irksome thing that was advertised as a plus was that the body mounting pins are concealed. Good in concept, but when remounting the body to the frame, there's a fair amount of hunting and jiggering to get the clip pins to line up. You have to flip the body and chassis upside down to line up the pins precisely. The wheelbase is decent, but the body is high(ish), so the potential for roll is there. Portal axles are a great feature, but on my favorite rock wall, the bottom plastic components were really taking a beating. The plastic wheels are okay for starters, but the rubber had to go pretty quickly. The foams were too stiff to allow for a good grip. The shocks are fine, but one was prone to leaking. As for the servo steering motor, it's strong enough but sluggish to react. I'm not sure why Axial has basically standardized on the S614 servo. You can do better than this pretty easily. It does have metal gears and it is advertised as being waterproof, but I would be very careful submerging this for too long. There is chassis flex which for some people is a deal breaker, but I don't find it severe enough to really affect the performance. The brushed motor is up to the task, but some hard drivers and competition situations really call for something stronger. Electronics are suitable and can be used for a while, but if you're planning to upgrade the motor, you'll probably also want to switch out the rest. The radio is also pretty standard for Axial, with suitable adjustments easy to tune. If you're using a Spectrum battery, the radio will display the remaining power in the battery. You have the option to use a full size battery toward the rear of the chassis, or a shorty pack that fits along one side. Using the shorty pack gets you closer to a more balanced weight distribution that's helpful in handling. What I did minimally to make the drive more pleasurable quickly and without sinking tons of money into this was to focus on adding more chassis weight up front and finding a better wheel/tire/foam combination. You can decide which weights and where, etc., but I found that 1.9 aluminum wheels, Pro-Line Hyrax tires and multi-density foams delivered the best results. Since my purchase, I've easily sunk another $200+ into this project. I don't regret doing that, but if you want to try to stick to just the cost of the RTR out of the box, know that there's a better experience awaiting you if you modify a few things here and there.

Great!

Having a lot of fun modifying and wheeling this thing. I take it out almost everyday when I take my dog for walks. Its a good platform but don't expect it to wheel good right off the bat. Recommend to invest into heavy brass wheels and better tires with Injora inserts right off the bat as well as brass front axel and it will become a great trail truck that you will be able to take on most trails and it will perform! But its kind of disappointing if you plan to leave it stock tbh.

Super fun

Super cool. Since there are no other reviews here I'll leave one. 4 stars instead of 5 only because it doesn't come with a battery. I knew it didn't come with one but for an RTR a battery should be included. Anyways I ran mine for the first time today I bought a 3300mah 3s Venom Lipo, I got just under 2 hours of run time, which is great. Wide open throttle, very technical rock crawls, this truck does a great job. In the pic you can see it compared to my scx24. I rolled it multiple times from decent heights and really gave it a good first run. Nothing broke. Still works great. Highly reccomend this truck and the scx24 aswell.

Super awesome RC

4 stars because it cost so much and came eithout battery/charger. The jeep itself is awesome. It's so much fun. I love that it can flex and climb more than I thought it would.
