Need a Metal Detecting Stud Finder to Complete Job

This product works great as long as your use meets a few criteria:1. You know where you are drilling. Don't go drilling if you don't know if water, electrical, HVAC ducts, etc may be up against the sub floor.2. Most USA floors with squeaks have plywood subfloor on top of joists. A normal stud finder wont work, even on the deepscan option, and it's unwise to go screwing into the floor blindly to find a joist. I strongly recommend that you get a small metal detecting stud finder. These devices typically allow you to find steel nails up to 4 or 6 inches down. You can then map out the nails in the studs before using the squeak remover.3. Buy enough of these kits to cover 16" in either direct of the squeak at minimum. Often you need to screw down all of the squeaky subfloor panel in order to eliminate the squeak.I also recommend screwing slowly and standing on either side of the length of the joist as you screw. The heads of these screws can strip VERY easily, and sometimes they snap prematurely. Luckily, it did not snap early enough to cause major issues for me yet. Overall, removing flooring and fixing the subfloor is the best option, but this kit can help avoid all the work. The kit is still a lot of work. It took me roughly 5 hours to fix a 10x6ft area due to squeak chasing in an older house.

Works as advertised

This product is the bee's knees, at least so far. I had a squeaky floor that's been driving me crazy for the last 6 months. Tried a few other screws, nails, shims etc, none worked really good. Came across this product, thought what the heck. One screw fixed the problem completely. Tricky part is finding the joist under the floor, but I bought a heavy duty stud finder and found it first time. Well worth the extra $35. Now I can walk over this spot on the floor and no noise at all. Not sure how it works through tile or hardwood, but for carpet it was everything it advertised itself.

Works Great But Be Weary of Early Breaks

This product definitely works and I’m super happy to have less squeaks in my 100+ yr old hardwood floors. However, even though I followed the hardwood instructions and pre-drilled with the 1/8 bit, the screw broke too early and now I have a quarter inch of the screw sticking up out of the floor (see first photo). I tried reverse drilling it out and using vice grips but no luck so far. After that, I decided to try again in a separate spot but I decided to drive the 1/8 drill bit further than the instructions said to and then I used the softwood instructions to manually break off the screw top (second photo). This worked great and the screws are beneath the wood like they should be (third photo). No more squeaks! Don’t know what I’ll do about the first failure but I’ll have to cover it somehow so it doesn’t knick someone.

Find the joist, then it’s magic

This product is amazing, once you find the floor joists then this will work without a single issue. Trick is to use measurements and it may take 2-5 holes before you know which one it is. I recommend drilling the hole in with a screw, then test if the squeak is gone before snapping it off. Stud finders don’t work, i bought 3 from $20-$80 and none were accurate. They are a rough idea but measurements of 16 inches from a floor joists you know is there works like a charm. Also a floor joist is 1.5 inches of width so it’ll take a few holes before you hit the jack pot.

Worked well enough, but not a Long-Term Fix

Used this in my 1953 Florida bungalow with original hardwood floors. It did reduce a couple of the worst squeaks temporarily, but a few months later, I’m starting to hear some minor squeaks creeping back in. I made about a dozen holes to install the screws, which I then had to fill and colormatch, so it’s not exactly mess-free. It’s definitely cheaper and less invasive than hiring a flooring company to shim from below—if that’s even an option—but don’t expect a permanent fix. A decent short-term solution, just go in with realistic expectations.

One squeak removal tool to rule them all!

Picture this: Fran Drescher laughing, while she is scraping her fingers down a chalkboard, all while jumping up and down on a set of bagpipes. That is the squeak I have been living with for the past 10 years. The real annoying part was that it came and went depending on the temperature and humidity, so no one could reliably prepare for the sound that was going to be unleashed by stepping on my own little piece of hell on earth. I would have gladly traded spaces with that family in Poltergeist. Now, however, I will have to cancel my appointment with Ghost Hunters thanks to the exorcism I performed with SQUEEEEEK NO MORE.Although I suspected the supernatural, the real nature of the squeak was mechanical. It was caused by the subfloor rubbing against a metal air duct that runs between our first and second floors in my master bedroom. It was unavoidable. If I tried sneaking to bed after a night at the pub, the squeak would wake my wife and let her know exactly how late I was out. Six years ago we had the carpet replaced and at that time I used a gross of decking screws to secure the subfloor securely to the joists. I thought I beat the squeak. But as I mentioned, conditions changed, the relative humidity in the house caused the subfloor and joists to expand and contract, coupled with the warm air in the duct during the winter and the cool conditioned air in the summer and I got only a couple months respite and the squeak returned with unrelenting furor. With carpet covering the floor, I thought it was time to throw in the towel and just try living with the disembodied voice of Fran Drescher and her demonic bagpipes.Six more years of being jarred awake by the world's worst alarm clock, as my wife would get ready for work an hour before I needed to get up, I decided enough was enough. Mechanical squeaks are hard to fix, and it was then I realized I had been going at it all wrong. I wouldn't be able to fix this just by making sure the joists and subfloor were secured, I had to go right to the heart of the problem. I had to go at the duct work. With my last shred of sanity I scoured the interwebs for a solution that would allow me to get at the squeak without damaging the carpet. Then I found it -- SQUEEEEEK NO MORE. While this product is designed to rid the house of common squeaks, it made no bold claim that it could slay the mechanical archfiend living in between my joists, but for 20 dollars I was willing to try it. Like Jean Chastel's silver bullets, I figured it would be worth a shot.I received the product from Amazon and I took little time to size up the attack. I decided to try place three screws in the same area that subdued the squeak six years ago. As advertised, I was able to sink the screws in and snap them off without harming the carpet, but the squeak persisted. I was not discouraged, I knew there was little hope in that strategy. I then decided to change tactics and go dead center between the joists in the cavity that housed the dreaded duct and its Nazgul-esque wail. I chose the one screw for this task and placed it in the supplied tripod. With no joist to bind against, the screw abruptly passed through the subfloor, and in an instant the squeak was gone. The screw was pinned between the subfloor and the duct restricting the movement between the two parts. Somewhat perplexed, amazed, and fully relieved I stepped back and forth in what once would have been an unholy orchestra of groans and squeaks replaced now with blissful beautiful silence. The silence was only briefly broken as I victoriously snapped the head of the screw off with the tripod tool.On this day, I came as close to feeling what Isilder must have felt as he cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand. Like Isilder, I kept a well deserved war prize -- the head from the screw that silenced the chthonic wailing that I lived with for ten long years. Thank you SQUEEEEEK NO MORE. Thank you.
