Styx: The Grand Illusion

Just got this record, and it's in better condition than I expected. I can't wait till my turntable arrives, so I can listen to this album. I've had it on cassette and CD in the past, but both are sadly lost. Now I have it on vinyl so I can appreciate it even more.

Given the massive success of this album, maybe that's the real concept behind this album. Make an average album, and get it power-promoted so it sells and sells and sells. So the 'grand illusion' could very well be the the quality of an album based on sales and reputation.When I first put this album on, I heard the first song, sung by Dennis, and it was alright I guess. Then the second song came on, but the first song started playing again. I figured there was something wrong with my copy of the album. They put the first song twice, instead of the second song. As the song played, suddenly Tommy started singing! So this actually was 'Angry Young Man'. Then when it was over, the third song started playing, 'Superstars', and it sounded like the first song again, only, a bit faster this time, although this was more of a group vocal.Once I had finished listening to the 7th song, 'Castle Walls' (or was it another man in the wilderness? Both songs were lumbering, heavy hearted affairs) there was a brief reprise of earlier songs on the album, funny how 'Superstars', 'Grand Illusion' and 'Come sail away' all seem to roll into one song in this reprise. Wouldn't be 'cause they all sound the same would it?Anyway, even if this album rarely rocks like it's follow up, 'Pieces of eight', it's still a good album, as Styx usually put out good albums. They only put out weak albums when all the band members are in court suing each other and revealing evidence such as 'he once said I am an idiot' and 'It broke my heart to be called controlling, I have always maintained I am a really nice person' etc. Rating ***
