Cayin N5ii, Android Based Master Quality Digital Audio Player

I have owned a couple of other DAPs - going back a few years - but this is my first Android based player. I am very impressed with the build quality, user interface, features and overall design of the N5 MK2 (N5ii). Cayin did a very nice job designing this DAP. The unit is solidly built and feels substantial. It was well packaged in a nice presentation style box,with an outer slip sleeve. Also included was a semi-rigid rubber/silicone case, charge/sync cable, two hi-res stickers and instruction manual. The player had both front and rear screen protectors pre-applied from the factory. Mine arrived with a charge of 55%. First I updated to the latest firmware, which only took a few minutes. I was happy to find I could directly swap my 2 x 128gb SanDisk micro sd cards from my old player into the N5ii. There are almost 7000 FLAC music files on the cards, but I was very surprised how quickly the player scanned them into the library. Listening has been very enjoyable. I find that there is more depth to the music and a wider soundstage. Instruments and voices have some air around them - they don't seem compressed and flattened. To me, the N5ii is a very musical player. It has nice dynamic range and frequency response. (I have done all my listening in "Audio Priority" mode with Etymotic Research ER4SR in ear monitors.) Album art is rendered quite well. I've been discovering features "hidden" in various Menu settings, which are not mentioned in the manual. I found the Cayin N5 MK2 forum at Head-Fi extremely helpful. I have had all of my product questions answered either by members, Cayin Support or an official representative of Cayin. The player does seem to have a glitch that I've noticed. The "VU Meter" screen's needles - accessed while music is playing - will randomly freeze. Returning to the "Home" screen starts them working again. Also, the quick alphabet scroll works for artists and songs, but not in the albums menu. (There is no English technical support available on the company's website. Hopefully this will change!) It would have been nice to have had an extra front and rear screen protector included. However, in my opinion, the Cayin N5 MK2 offers very high value for the money. Sound and musicality just wonderful! I have been completely satisfied with the DAP so far. Shipping was very quick from MusicTeck/Amazon. Music: classical chamber music (mostly strings), small jazz ensembles (Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck) male and female jazz vocalists (Sinatra, Torme, June Christy, Ella Fitzgerald, Jane Monheit, Diana Krall) classic (Beatles, Dire Straits, Billy Joel, Peter Gabriel, CSN&Y, Sting, Joni Mitchell, JT)

For the price, this device is pretty great.PROS - Audio is very good, - works with a lot of different headphones - Love the physical buttons ---> quick play buttons (play/pause/rw/ff/skip) ---> volume dial works really well and doesn't turn accidentally while in pocket ---> and the power button on the left works well too. ---> while not a mechanical button, the home button on the bottom front works as expected. - Creating playlists, while always hard on portable devices, is workable. - Navigation works okay, logical, but a little sluggish - Two SD Card slots. - Silicone cover that the N5ii comes with works very well. Add just that little bit extra of "bezel" and covers the SD card slots well. - Extremely light That last point is particularly wonderful. TheCONS - The screen isn't very good. Especially when using in brighter environments. - sound profile adjustments don't work in audio priority mode - wifi and bt don't work in audio priority mode - third party apps are pretty slow, but admittedly, once working, work well. - no optical out, only a jerry-rigged coax out.Favorite headphones with this for me is the meze 99. I've tried with hd800, tr80/250, utopia, T1, shure, etys.

Lettore loseless, acquistato dopo aver letto molte recensioni positive anche su forum specializzati. Purtroppo dovuto mandare indietro a causa del display che durante la riproduzione lampeggiava. Come se la matrice lcd fosse rovinata. Per la parte audio veramente ottimo. Fatto il reso e preso nuovamente. La recensione finale sarà sul nuovo arrivo. Porto la recensione da due a 4 stelle; infatti il nuovo cambio mi ha permesso di apprezzare le qualità di questo lettore. La parte software rimane un po' il suo handcap maggiore e spero che con i prossimi aggiornamenti possano sistemare le incertezze che lo caratterizzano. Per la parte audio nulla da eccepire, si tratta di un Dap con motore Sabre e si sente.. Una qualità audio spaventosa che surclassa lettore di fascia alta e marche anor piu' blasonate. La parte bilanciata è spettacolare con il suono ancora piu' coinvolgente, dettagliato e senza rumori di fondo. Da migliorare i jack cuffie che molti hanno lamentato come delicati; infatti piu' che di scarsa qualità sono un po' sottodimansionati e bisogna forzare per inserire le cuffie. Comunque a questo prezzo rimane un ottimo lettore. La parte Dac non l'ho provata in quanto bisogna acquistare a parte dei cavi proprietari Cayin con connessione USB-C. Le applicazioni di terze parti funzionano molto bene come la connessione internet via wi-fi.

If I see the slow display or 3.5" jack connector mechanical weakness it is not 5*, but it is a DAC / music player and the most important property is the music quality. That is superb. We tested it in an audio studio and it was better than some or same good as tested desktop DAC-s in this price range and it is much more useful. We found a Lindemann standallone DAC for 4500EUR which was better of course, but for this price it is a great DAC. Maybe slightly bright on high frequencies.3rd party Android applications like internet radios can run on device.Negatives;- No USB cable for charging and for digital coax at the same time. It is a problem if you would like to use it as a standalone digital source and there are digital signal processors later it in the chain. Maybe problem for few people :)- Digital Eq sw not high quality, better to use pure "Audio Priority" mode all time.- 3.5" jack connector designed for headset cables, but a bit weakly soldered for heavy, studio cablesOverall, I was pleased by the quality and use it as "analog" source for my high-end home system.For digital source I must find something else because of no digital + charging cable in one, plus there is no optical output and difficult to fit digital coax to digital XLR or to optical input which are on my sound processor. But again, for this price optical out are rare on portable DACs.Edit; I replaced it with a Chord Qutest + Digione Signature player in my home system, that was the first affordable DAC + streamer which has better sound quality plus features, but for five times more money. I recommend Cayin N5ii as a "cheap" option, if analog output is enough for your home Hifi system.

Sonido bastante sobresaliente. Pero el software deja mucho que desear. No reconoce toda mi librería y constantemente pierde la infirmacion de la librería. Una pena que por esos detalles el producto desmerezca. Además no tiene bluetooth APTX. Cuando otros en la misma gama de precio como el fiio x5iii si lo tiene.. incluso el cayin N3 que es casi un 70% más barato si lo tiene.

Il DAP è eccellente. Qualità audio ai massimi livelli. Imbattibile per il prezzo richiesto.Unico neo la durata della batteria che difficilmente supererà le 9 ore con tutte le connessioni spente.Roberto
