Bought as a gift and while I don’t think it has been watched yet, what a great film!

A true classic
Included in this DVD is the silent version of this film with Rudolph Valentino. Having never seen a Valentino film, I actually watched this one first. It was okay, not great, but worth a viewing. I personally found some of the acting (particularly the lead actress) a little too theatrical in this version, although Valentino was very good. I would say it is not his best film, but it's worth a look. I then watched the main version here with Greta Garbo and Robert Taylor and I was almost blown away. These two were amazing together; they had great chemistry and just played off of each other very well. I believe Robert Taylor was quite young when he played this role, but he does a great job and stands up well against the legendary Garbo. The supporting actors are great as well--Lionel Barrymore, Henry Daniell, and Laura Hope Crews are excellent in their roles and are able to hold their own. Picture quality and sound are okay, not great, but okay. I don't believe there was any true restoration done to this film, but it is completely watchable and enjoyable. Subtitles are available if needed. This is a wonderful old romance with great acting, costumes, and scenery; I would recommend this to anyone who likes these types of movies.

Garbo's most unguarded and vivid performance
Greta Garbo's superb performance as CAMILLE finally comes to DVD. Based on the romantic novel by Alexandre Dumas. The story takes place in the giddy Paris of the 1800's. Marguerite Gautier (Greta Garbo) is the most dazzling and popular courtesan, who delights in breaking hearts and squandering her money, yet does her best to hide a frail constitution. Into her life comes the handsome yet humble Armand (Robert Taylor). The jaded Marguerite experiences her first taste of real love, but Armand's father (Lionel Barrymore) insists that she call off the romance. She returns to the empty artifice of Paris, but Marguerite will be forever changed thanks to her "unstained love". Fantastic support performances from Laura Hope Crews (as the grasping Prudence), Elizabeth Allan, Lenore Ulric, Jessie Ralph and Henry Daniell. The beautiful gowns are provided by Adrian and the charming score by Herbert Stothart.Director George Cukor managed to extract from Garbo her most unguarded and vivid screen performance. She simply becomes Dumas' "Lady of the Camellias", and never does the audience see her merely acting. Those under the false belief that Garbo wasn't a superb actress should take another look at CAMILLE.Though the DVD transfer is far from the best. The print is littered with scratches, dirt, debris and watermarks. Warners could at least have restored the film for it's DVD debut. The big extra is the inclusion of the 1921 silent film version starring Alla Nazimova as Marguerite and Rudolph Valentino as Armand. The print has been beautifully-restored and features a brand-new musical score provided by Peter Vantine. For those who are only familiar with the Garbo CAMILLE, the silent version will be a lovely new look at the story, now set in the modern times with Nazimova emoting wonderfully as the doomed Marguerite.Warners cannot be forgiven for the slipshod way they have released Garbo's CAMILLE on DVD, but the silent version somewhat lessens the blow.

Romantic and Tragic.
It's hard to classify this as Garbos best performance because she had so many but it definitely ranks in the top five.Taylor gives an excellent performance as a suitor who falls deeply and almost blindly in love with her..Camille is romantic, intriguing and tragic all rolled into one, complete with beautiful costumes,an excellent script and a very good supporting cast.

Buy this for Taylor/Garbo - - LOVE this for Nazimova/Valentino!!!
I have always adored the pairing of the young and Dashing Robert Taylor and the mature appealing Greta Garbo. The death scene is tragic and their love encounters are sweet and ring true. The movie seemed one of those timeless unequaled classics BUT peak into the special features and click into the "modern" Camille as it was advertised in the 20s and suddenly . . . it's a kinda magic! The silence speaks louder than the voices and the innocent blushing of the early romance between Armand and Marguerite becomes electrifying. Nazimova is striking as the ill-fated character. The mis-en-scene is extraordinary with the art deco sets and glimmering costumes. Valentino brings out the sparkle of what made him the angry romantic that he was. My only complaint is the orchestration to this silent feature which left gaps without real dramatic purpose. There was silence when there should have been trumpets and cymbals and piano harmonies. Anyway, it doesn't distract too much from the film. A treasure within a gem. Thanks Warner Brothers for this fantastic release!

RESTORED CAMILLE WITH RODOLFO!!!
I write about "Camille-Turner Entertaiment.co"2005-dvd.On the package you find written:region 1,but my dvd reader which reads "all region"or "region 2"only,it can read it ! I don't know how,but it does it! Here you find the Greta Garbo&Robert Taylor's version of Camille, but I've bought this dvd to find a restored version of "Camille" with Rodolfo Valentino...and I've found it here!!! Now I can see the gorgeous Rodolfo's acting in this movie,I have another version of Camille but VERY poor and I've written about with my review on Amazon.com,where I've written about Rodolfo acting and now I confirm everything, because with this beatiful version I can see many details I've missed before.Nothing about Greta Garbo version because it doesn't interest me.But if you like all these performers you could have a great set with a low price.I think it's a low price to have Rodolfo's version only.malefica from Italy.

Great GRETA at her best.
Garbo/Margherita Gauthier emerges marvellously along with the two giants - Dumas the son and Giuseppe Verdi - who gave artistic life to the Lady of the Camellias. Garbo's rendering has all the allure of the woman in love, her glances, her true passion, her suffering, her disease and her final death. The movie is best appreciated if we understand the social background in which it was produced by MGM: 1936: the world trapped between two wars, a time when people tend to evade and appreciate even more the values of peaceful countryside, the fun-living Parisian social life, the strength of love. More, I have discovered the beautiful young Robert Taylor and the fascinating English actor Henry Daniell. Although one can watch the film on You Tube, I preferred to buy it. Very good viewing, considering the year it was produced, 1936, and very convenient price starring GREAT GRETA.

A great movie classic
Yes, I enjoyed watching this movie. The b/w-contrast is a bit strong; perhaps the film was 're-touched'? But it's still a great classic and I'll watch it many more times over the years.I. Stegner
