Another Wodehouse winner!
I loved the Jeeves & Wooster books so I was sad when I read the last one. Then I decided to move on to other Wodehouse books and have read a few since. I have to say this is one of my favorites! It definitely compares to the hilarity of the Jeeves/Wooster books. Uncle Fred or the Fifth Earl of Ickenham is one of my favorite Wodehouse characters. He always seems to be dragging his nephew Pongo Twistleton (occasionally mentioned as a fellow Drones club member in the Wooster books) into trouble but always seems to get through it as is typical in the Wodehouse books. Anyway, it is a great read, a good laugh, and a lot of fun. On a side note, if you like Wodehouse, the dvd series of Jeeves and Wooster (starring Hugh Laurie from the tv show House) is also very funny. You will see many of your favorite Jeeves story lines in them and they are very true to Wodehouse.

Fun Read, But...
... but difficult to keep the characters straight, particularly when youโre new to the Blandings Castle series - and this edition doesnโt offer an โX-rayโ feature to bail you out. Particularly true during the many dialogue interchanges.

Classic!
P.G. Wodehouse is a bit like the Three Stooges. Can be really funny but best enjoyed in small doses. A bit tough to get through the dated British slang but still a fun read. I came across this as a recommendation of 5 great books admired by Richard Dawkins (author of "The God Delusion" and a recent autobiography)and since I enjoy his work decided to give this one a try. Been many years since I've read Wodehouse so this was an enjoyable return.

Another Wodehouse winner!
Another Wodehouse hilarious adventure! Uncle Fred was new to me but now heโs a favorite. The used paperback I sent for was just like new so I was very pleased with that also.

Great Fun!
Next time someone asks you what you're reading you'll be able to tell them you're reading P.G. Wodehouse and not some of the best seller crap that is massed produced by a team of writers. Read Uncle Fred in Spring Time, or any of the Blandings Castle series or the Jeeves series and you are guaranteed lots of smiles and some burst of laughs. J. K. Rowlings wishes she could be as good as Wodehouse. (Her recent effort is like walking through a swamp.)WARNING: If you read one Wodehouse novel you may be hooked.Have fun.

Uncle Fred Is A Delight
For those of you who know Wodehouse, Uncle Fred is exactly the same as the Honorable Galahad Threepwood of Blandings Castle. And since Galahad, otherwise known as Gally, is my absolute favorite Wodehouse character, I think Uncle Fred is zany, big-hearted and an absolute delight. You either love Wodehouse or you hate him. If you love him, you'll love Uncle Fred in any book he's in.

It's Blandings - what more do you need to know?
For anyone who hasn't read the Blandings stories, but who has watched the TV adaptations, forget what you saw on TV. First, the stories were adapted so much that they had little to do with the books, and more importantly, did not come anywhere near the wonderful writing and a use of the English language that no-one since has come within a million miles of achieving. I don't enjoy everything P. G. Wodehouse wrote - I'm not a fan of Ukridge for example - but the Blandings books and the Jeeves and Wooster stories are incomparable in their brilliance. Blandings Castle is meant to be in Shropshire, but it seems to be in another world, where the sun always shines and the good guys (and girls) always end up on the winning side - but only after a number of increasingly hilarious plot-twists. In this one, Uncle Fred (Lord Ickenham) is the hero. Lord Ickenham really should not be allowed out without a minder, given the chaos he causes; but his heart is always in favour of young love, and he always manages to bring happiness in the end. The use of the English language is sublime, there are good guys and there is Baxter. Lord Emsworth is on form (i.e. doesn't know what is going on most of the time, and doesn't care as long as he can spend time with his pig, the Empress of Blandings, who features large (actually very large) in the story. As usual, Wodehouse spins several plots together, so that everything becomes hilariously entangled; but, as always, just when you think it's impossible, he untangles everything and, as I say, the good guys/girls win. Brilliant.

A prize-winner to match the Empress
Another wonderful novel by PGW - this one sees Uncle Fred, or the Earl of Ickenham, and his hapless nephew Pongo Twistleton, invade Blandings Castle, home of Lord Emsworth and his prize winning pig the Empress. But all in a good cause, of course! While his uncle's antics make Pongo blanch, Uncle Fred has a heart of gold - and not even Baxter the Efficient, Lady Constance Keeble, the Duke of Dunstable, or Bosham with a shotgun can hold him back when he's on a mission. This is a wonderful, laugh-out-loud book; one of those books that, as you read, you hear the plummy voices come alive in your head - to be read, and re-read, and savoured with every page.

Just one tiny thing
This is as usual an excellent rendition: Jarvis is equalled only by Johnathan Cecil at reading Wodehouse. Just one tiny grumble: this is not a CD transfer of the cassette recording Jarvis did some years ago, but a new recording. Somehow MJ seems to have taken the excellent 'stinker' voice he had for the Duke of Dunstable and given it, in a modified form, to Galahad Threepwood (cf. the CD of 'A Pelican at Blandings'). Dunstable now has a rather more morose voice which isn't quite the thing by comparison. However, this doesn't leave this wonderful recording down among the wines and spirits: cry "What Ho!" and enjoy another helping of Blandings.

The books are a fantastic read, and this edition will please every Wodehouse ...
I'm working my way around to getting every Wodehouse in the series, replacing tatty old paperbacks with hardbacks (and filling in the blanks in my collection). The books are a fantastic read, and this edition will please every Wodehouse fan.

Gloriously silly - far better than Prozac.
My glowing review will never match the wit and language of the many distinguished reviewers on the dust jacket. Gloriously silly but never a badly written sentence. Perfect antidote to modern stress.
