Beautifully written - though text quite small

Only read the first chapter but already feel that I have my money's worth, really nicely written with good detailed history. The text is rather small, with too many words to a line (about twenty, newspapers have maybe ten, novels nine to twelve), so you may need a bookmark else you get to the end of the line and you have to find the start of the correct line. Too many tech books have this problem. But I still love the book.

Very well written and accessible

I've been building and using PC since the '80s, and used to use the DR DOS and MS DOS command line interfaces to good effect, but I've never found a need to use Linux before. Now I would like to run one specialist astronomy program only available in Unix/Linux so it's time to learn. This book is clear and easy to follow, and written in an engaging style. Strictly speaking you don't need to know a lot of the history involved, but it does help to make sense of things. I've plodded through to page 77 so far, and the "Readme" files for the program I want to use are starting to make some sense, fingers crossed!I set up my netbook with Puppy Linux (for no reason beyond it being described as good for netbooks) rather than Ubuntu, which this book is based on, but that hasn't caused any significant issues.I knocked one star off as the printing in my copy is a bit duff, with a broad faint region running down every second left hand page, still legible, but irritating.

Great book

Thank you for the opportunity to read this book as an ARC reader.I am new to programming. Just pass a beginner's course in programming in Python and look for more books and courses to get into programming deeper. I'm happy that I got an opportunity to read this Beginners Guide. I found it very helpful. At the moment I'm about 60 pages into it but I like it. I'll appreciate that the author is providing the text with images as well. I see this book as very well written and also suitable for beginners as I am. Great book overall.

I have read a few books on this subject and never really understood it fully. This book was easy to follow and gave great insight into learning Linux.

Well written, concise coverage of basics

Written in an engaging, comprehensible style. Easy to follow along and learn. Not providing answers to the challenges may not be to some people's liking, but I agree with it because you don't get given answers irl.Book has no index, otherwise 5*.

Thorough!

A well thought out book.Mr. Bartley knows his stuff. I bought a lot of Linux books but after a couple of chapters (or even pages) I just throw my hands up because I cannot follow along with the book, either "missing files" or "permission denied", etc. But this book is carefully written (the author recommends Ubuntu, with good cause, everything is already setup (like a lab, for example aliases for "ls" command is already in your .bashrc file). He talks about child processes and environment variables before he gets into the difference between shell scripts and shell functions. If you want to know the inner workings of the shell, get this book. It is for newbies like me with a little knowledge of a few commands.

Successfully satisfied

I truly appreciate this book. It clearly explained the contents and operation of Linux, which allowed me to successfully complete my course. I appreciate it simple and well organized language because this is the first time that I’ve had to use the Linux operating system as a student.

Haven't had time to read it yet

Skimmed through the book. It appears to have potential as a reference.

Old dog, new tricks.

After 40 years I am finally planning on making the move to Linux. This book is well laid out for a beginner but has valuable info for someone of intermediate experience.

I wish I had this book 25 years ago

This book is probably one of the BEST books out there that is covering LINUX/UNIX functionality. IMHO, it is definitely a great beginners' book with solid and easy to understand details for daily use of Linux and it also gives you a brief history of why the things are the way they are. It should be in any IT professional's library.Thank you so much for such a great book, I wish I had this 25 years ago...
