You need 2 AA batteries. They last a reasonably long time.

Q: Would this be a good starter set for a very bright nine year old? Can he make his own designs with this set? Will it teach him about engineering?

Yes. My kids had a great time.will teach planning, visualization and engineering skills. May need some adult supervision since some of the directions are very detailed

Q: I'd like to get this but I will also need to get a container to keep all the parts in, any idea how large a container I would need?

If you keep the box like we did you would be able to put every thing back in the box, It does not come with a container. If you need A container you would need about A two to three gallon container

Q: Can the ferris wheel move both clockwise and counterclockwise?
