Had a lot more functionality than i was expecting!
The media could not be loaded. If anyone has a check engine light show up on their car, they already know repair shops charge in excess of 50-60 dollars just to pull the code for a quick diagnostic check. Typically dealerships or mechanics you have a good relationship apply this cost to the actual repair as a goodwill, but more often than not resolving simple issues (like replacing a sensor, loose wire connections) can be can be diagnosed and fixed at the home garage. This particular device lets you pull these codes, conveniently look them up in a built in database, monitor key vehicle parameters and to enable you to run simple diagnostic procedures to be find and fix issues with your car.I had a check engine light show up on my car a couple of weeks ago and i was shopping for a similar device and found this one that fit within my price range. And so far it has already paid for itself within a day of owning it! i was able to find and clear the code, find the issue in the vehicle and apply a quick fix to resolve it.Here are the Pros -1. Easy and self explanatory interface with the instruction manual directly on the device2. No separate charging or battery required as the device is powered directly off the OBD connector3. fault code database directly on the device for easy lookup (some codes are proprietary and may not available but they are very easily looked up in your car service manual or a simple google search)4. Ability to monitor key vehicle parameters and log data, and transfer this data to a computer via a serial port and supplied USB cable.Cons -1. The product looks substantial and somewhat rugged, but it feels light and plasticky when you handle it. This isn't related to the functionality of the product at all. But a little more heft to the body, and rubber grips will go a long way to giving this product a "premium" feel.2. Contact switches below the buttons are somewhat stiff and centered - so you have to be right in the middle of the button with a slightly higher push force to recognize the input. (compared to other devices people may be used to). These are minor nitpicks however, and does not in anyway affect the overall functionality of the product.I will post a follow up review in about 6months to add comments on durability of the product. Until then 5 stars!

Very good basic OBD II reader
This is a great basis scanner. It feels good holding it and the large screen is easy to read. This is not a bidirectional scanner but for a quick scan of a potential buy it is great.

VERY FAST Diagnosic Tool - FULL FEATURED
Let me first say that I've owned 7 diagnostic readers in he last decade and this one is the best yet. The large screen and LONG cord are some of its best features.! Subaru buries their diagnostic port pretty deep under the dash and this long cord is extremely handy!Plug in the sensor, turn the key and Launch comes to life. The handheld boots in remarkable time and presents you with all of the important options from code reading, freeze frame data retrieval, live data feed etc. I even tells you if the car has passed its emissions readiness tests! While my Subaru didn't have any check engine codes or Freeze frame data the live data feed was very impressive. My car supports CAN Bus so the variables updated quite quickly. I was very impressed with the speed of the refresh and even more impressed with how many options you could change. For the very reasonable cost of this device you get a near pro grade solution. Like most pro grade devices the case is even covered in the rubber to prevent damage for those unforeseen situations. We've probably all got a story about leaving the code reader on the roof of the car. The launch has as good a chance of any to survive and report for duty again! All of my reviews include a product suggestion and this is no different. This device is 99% of the way to being perfect. My only suggestion is that they backlight the keypad. In capturing data in the car at night its hard to see the buttons. It should be noted that the buttons are large enough its really easy to navigate by feel too!

You need one of these !
I've had a Launch scanner in my toolbox for many years. I drive older vehicles and the older scanner was fine. My wife has traded up a couple of times over the last few years and the old scanner was old school and I got this scanner to bring us up to date. It's one of those things you rarely use but is so wonderful to have in your hand when you need it. I put the old scanner in the toolbox on my 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 which I drive the most. I've plugged this new scanner in on our cars to check it out but have not needed it to read error messages so far. I'm a do-it-yourself guy and being able to narrow down problems and issues and reset error codes is wonderful. I highly recommend having one of these handy. You will have an idea of what issues you are having before taking your car to a mechanic if you don't work on your own car. It's a wonderful tool to have.

Lifetime Free Update only works with iold Windows systems
The unit itself appears to work OK> However, I haven't been able to use it on a vehicle that has a check engine light. the 3 star rating is due the following description of the CR529 on the Amazon website: "Lifetime Free Update Scan Tool (Upgrade version)." According the website for the updates, it only works on the following outdated systems: Windows 7, Windows XP and Windows 10.
