The Best Lid I’ve Had In 48 Years
Highly recommended if you want a simple, truly premium helmet while saving a couple of hundred dollars.4.7-Stars: The DT-X is really Aria’s bargain lid and I could make the case of it being Aria’s best “Bang For The Buck” for the general rider. I don’t see this helmet in the current Arai offerings. (araiamerica.com)Bang For The Buck: I paid $400 and added $60 in mods. Most of my full-face helmets cost in this neighborhood. This being a hand-built helmet, with great customization, repair and warranty brings it up to almost 5-stars. However, it is not the lightest helmet on my shelf. To counter the weight is its balance, I do not feel it on my head going down the road.Protection & Durability: I’ll believe the testing folk; I’m not willing to test protection. It seems outstanding, however. The shell and guts all seem top shelf, double “D” ring fastener. Polycarb face shield should take the rocks and acorns. DOT and Snell (2015).Features: God, I love the view from inside this lid. Folk hate on the visor latch, but it only took me one day to see the trick. (Thick gloves do make it a tough visor to unlock) Great venting, just fantastic. I cannot say enough good about the visor vents, flow from the chin and exhaust pull. Double D fasteners are what I want and got. Pinlock pegs already on the visor. I can mod this lid to fit my head. I wish I could rip/swap out the collar and it had emergency removal.Comfort: Only my RKT-101 fits better, but that is more a function of my head shape. (A longer intermediate oval) My head measures 59cm across the brow but my dome is almost 60cm. I’ve learned to live with less than great comfort since helmets generally aren’t shaped to fit my head-shape. The DT-X allows me to get a larger shell and mod out everything but the collar for fit. Thicker cheek pads for my weak chin? NP. Peel off foam? Check. Thicker foam liner? Check. Chin curtain? Check. For $60 extra this lid fits (almost) like my RKT with more neutral aerodynamics and better noise level. Everything I want.Style: Look! Another full-face helmet! *shrug*Fit: My brow says “L” but my dome fit says “XL.”Shape: Slight pressure on my brow, even on the XL, makes me think this is a tiny bit on the round side of “Intermediate Oval.”Weight: Not bad. It doesn’t bother my broken, arthritic neck at all; but it is not as light as my graphite lids. (Duh)Noise Level: It is pretty dang quiet-I think the quietest I have by a stretch. I suspect there are quieter, though.Air Flow: Great for a full-face lid. No, really great. However, it is full-face and designed for the visor to be closed. It seems Arai doesn’t think you should open the visor going down the road.No regrets.
